It has been estimated that about 1in 3 people will develop cancer at some point in their lifetime. There are over 200 different types of cancer and many people with cancer can be cured. Even if a cancer can't be cured, it can often be controlled with treatment for months or years. One day cancer will be beaten and the more research that is done, the sooner that day will come. Yorkshire Cancer Research is Yorkshires very own cancer charity, helping the people of Yorkshire avoid, survive and cope with cancer by funding world class research. This contributes to the global fight against the disease.
Most people if they haven't had cancer themselves will know someone who has. Over the years I have known several people who have had cancer. From people I have supported in my job, to friends, neighbours, work colleagues and family. I have a friend who has just beaten breast cancer and a work colleague who is waiting for the all clear after having bowel cancer. My wonderful mother beat breast cancer 22 years ago and she's now in her 80's and living life to the full. On July 2nd, which was my Birthday I lost my Grandmother who was affectionately known as Aunty Vi as she was my Grandfathers second wife. She had been battling liver cancer. This is why this charity is close to my heart.
I am running 3 races in August and September for everyone who has been affected by cancer and whatever I can raise will help in the fight to beat cancer. I am running The Jane Tomlinson York 10k on August 3rd, The Run or Dye 5k fun run at Castle Howard on August 9th and my biggest challenge, THe Great North Run in Newcastle on September 7th. It's on my bucket list to run this iconic half marathon but I've never run this distance before!
I only took up running just over 2 years ago when I decided to do NHS couch to 5k to try and improve my fitness. When I started I could only manage a minute at a time! I've run a few 5k races, a few 10k races and a twighlight run for cancer research. I also completed Total Warrior on June 22nd this year at Bramham Park. I'm going to run each mile of the GNR for someone close to me who has had cancer, so if I feel like giving up I'll be reminded that I have to be strong like they were. I will cross the line and finish the race with my good friend Jean Sagar who is running for Martin House Hospice for children and young people.
Please support me if you can. Each and every pound will count and help Yorkshire Cancer Research to carry on the wonderful work that they do.
Thank you. Xxx
