Today 889 people will be hit with the news that they have cancer, then it will hit everyone who loves them.  My story is that of my dad Dick Lewis, who at the very young age of 62 has just been diagnosed with Lung Cancer.

It came as a complete shock to me and my family so after the initial upset of receiving the news, we all rallied around Dick to provide him all the support we could.  Some positive news came within a few weeks that, although Dicks cancer is advanced and inoperable, he does have a type of cancer that can be treated by a tablet (Tarceva) rather than Chemotherapy.  Only  1 in 20 cancer patients have the type of cancer that can be targetted by tablets and these patients go on to live normal active lives for many years with few side affects. 

I have chosen the Maggies Centres as my sponsor beneficiary because they provide support to cancer patients and their families. We have already benefitted from their support so we know how important this type of care and support is. It can be a lifeline to other people enduring ongoing treatment and for their families living through the nightmare.

 

I am going to run 10 Kilometers on 29 September 2013 and to kick start the training I have given up chocolate which I know Dick would be more impressed by this sacrifice than me actually doing the run!! 

 

So, I am sorry to ask but I need all your support.  Every year I enthusiastically give money to the charities of friends, family and acquaintances but its now PAYBACK time!!!!   So I guess I am appealing to everyone who knows me to dig deep into their pockets and throw me a few quid.

 

As you know, I'm currently very unfit, fat and lazy and so this is going to be a tough 7 weeks but my partner Caroline has already helped me purchase proper running trainers and as she quite rightly says :- I need to just shut up and get on with it!  I have so far managed to run 3 miles (without walking) in 34 minutes and I am improving every day!
