Story
I visited Nepal a couple of years ago loved the experience and always planned to go back. I wasn’t thinking of getting to Everest Base Camp but when the opportunity came up with the added incentive of raising money for Dementia Australia, I felt like it was meant to be!
My motivation is largely because my Mum had Alzheimer’s Disease and passed away in 2008 after about eight years of a slow and very distressing decline. My son, Theo who was 12 at the time, helped write her eulogy and his opening sentence was “ I barely knew my Nana because she was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s Disease when I was about 6 years old”.
So, I’m undertaking the trek to commemorate my incredible Mum who endured so much in the later years of her life; to challenge myself to do something way out of my comfort zone (I really don’t like heights!), and to raise money for a cause I’m passionate about.
Having worked in the area of dementia support for the past 25 years and seen it's impact on families, I'm also doing the trek for Theo in the hope that any children he may have will grow up with the love and support of their grandparents. Also I hope that by the time he reaches an age at which dementia is now common, a cure will have been found or at the very least, that organisations such as Dementia Australia will have the resources to provide support for every family affected by dementia of any kind.
I'm funding my trip independently, so every dollar raised, will go directly to Dementia Australia.
Please give whatever you can to this very important cause.
Thank you so much!
