trek to kilimanjaro · 25 June 2012
Hi Everyone.....
Another wee adventure looms....and all for a such a wonderful worthwhile cause...Myeloma UK
The costs of this trek to Kilimanjaro are being paid by ourselves! Yes!...car boot sales, helping decorate houses for a fee, painting, cleaning, anything where we can raise a pound or two!
So...whatever money you give on this page will all go to the charity...and hopefully raise awareness of the great work Myeloma UK is doing.
A dear friend was diagnosed with myeloma almost two years ago and after a very long uphill struggle he is now enjoying life to the full!
He had stem cell replacement after many months of chemotherapy and various other treatments and long stays in hospital. Myeloma is a type of bone marrow cancer arising from plasma cells which are normally found in bone marrow. Plasma cells, crucially form part of the body's immune system. It is different from other cancers as there is no evidence of lumps or tumours. It is relatively rare with about 4000 new cases diagnosed annually. Although patients can live many years after being diagnosed, myeloma is not yet curable.
We didn't know too much about Myeloma until this happened and apparently most people..especially younger adults...may donate stem cells. If we were more aware of this illness and how we can help then surely that is a good thing.
Myeloma UK receives no government funding and is dependant mostly on donations and fund raising activities...hence our wee climb!
Thanks everyone!
