At 1.30am on Friday 13th(!) March I was told I had a cancerous tumour in my bowel which was large and advanced. The tumour had perforated, meaning I had the start of sepsis, so I had emergency surgery the following day. I was later told the tumour was the size of a pineapple, which I really struggled to get my head around, and had attached to several of my other organs. This went a long way in explaining why I had been feeling so ill for so long. The amazing team at Jimmy's saved my life and I will be forever grateful and humbled by them.
Since my diagnosis, Bowel Cancer UK have been a great support with loads of useful information. There are only 2,500 cases in under 50's in the UK each year so it's not something I knew much about. Charities are struggling with a lack of funds from lock-down so I am trying to do my bit by signing up for Bowel Cancer UK's 'Step up for 30' fundraiser.
I am 9+ weeks post-op and start chemo today (19th May). I am extremely lucky to be told I am 'cancer-free' and the chemo is precautionary to reduce the risk of it coming back. Taking part in this will hopefully keep me positive and motivated throughout June when I adjust to life with chemo and it's side effects. Being active every day for a month will be a challenge, especially if I am suffering with fatigue, sickness and/or diarrhoea so any sponsorship would be a great help.
As an aside, I would like to sincerely thank everyone for their kindness since my surgery. I have been overwhelmed by the messages, gifts and practical support. It has made a huge difference to me and my family and I will never forget it - thank you!
