Story
Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
One of my best friends has been through the trauma of a molar pregnancy and now that she has made a full recovery we are keen to raise awareness of the condition and help raise money for the Jean's Research Trust Fund which supports the excellent work of Weston Park Hospital where my friend was treated.
Molar pregnancies are fairly rare, happening with approximately 1 case for every 700-800 pregnancies in the UK. When a molar pregnancy arises, a problem occurs at the time of conception that results in the formation of pre-cancerous cells that grow very rapidly. Very few people have heard of a Molar Pregnancy and therefore it receives little attention. A molar pregnancy can be either classed as complete or partial. Most women with a partial mole do not need to have further treatment. But around 1 in 100 women have some remaining abnormal cells in the deeper tissues of the womb or other parts of the body. This is called a persistent gestastional tumour. These women need chemotherapy treatment, which can completely get rid of the abnormal cells.
Without the support from the staff at Sheffield's Weston Park Hospital, my friend's xperience would have been much harder to deal with.
