Fundraising for Leeds Hospitals Charity
£845
raised of £4,000 target
In memory of Ricky Nugent
We support Leeds Teaching Hospitals staff to deliver the best care for our patients

Story

On Sunday the 27th of September 2009 my son went

off to play a game of rugby for his club West Leeds ARLFC. Just a normal Sunday
morning, but very sadly my boy suffered a fatal brain haemorrhage whilst
playing and didn’t return home again. Two days after that on the 29th
of September 2009 we had the terrible task of turning off his life support
machine. My son had never regained consciousness, he was just 16 years old and
his name was Ricky James Nugent.

As you can imagine this tragedy absolutely devastated a
whole community, myself, his dad Alistair, his adoring two older sisters Linsey
and Kelly and the rest of our family and Ricky’s many friends. He was such a
popular much loved lad.

In 2010 we embarked on a fundraising mission which would see
the start of a decade of raising money for charity in Ricky’s memory. I stopped
this in 2018 after raising £38,000 for various charities, these included
Headway (the brain injury charity), The Rugby League Benevolent Fund, Help for
Heroes, Sue Ryder, Dewsbury District Hospital, Leeds General Infirmary and
numerous others along the way. We have staged Fun Days, Raffles, Auctions,
Parachute descents, long distance bike rides, oh! And yes two elderly ladies
reached the summit of Kilimanjaro all for Ricky!!

Last year as it was going to be Ricky’s 10 year anniversary
myself and my constant right hand through all this Donna Copland decided we
couldn’t let the date pass without marking it in some way so we decided to
fundraise again to try to raise ‘a couple of thousand pounds’ to take our total
raised to £40,000, we raised more so decided to try to raise our target to
£50,000 within the year before Ricky’s 11th anniversary this coming
September.

Things were going great and we had three different events
planned with ‘Just Giving’ pages set up, we were also planning another mini Fun
Day, then Covid-19 struck and everything has had to be put on hold apart from raffles
which we are holding on Social Media via the Internet.

We have managed to raise £8,500 but need about £3,500 to
reach our total of £50,000 in the ten years since Ricky died.

All the money raised this year is going to Ward 6,
Neurological I.C.U at Leeds General Infirmary part of our wonderful NHS and who
looked after Ricky for the last two days of his life. We are also supported by
Leeds Cares (registered charity number 1170369.)

Many, many family, friends, businesses etc have helped us
achieve this fantastic amount of money, it’s been hard work and we have
sometimes felt like giving up but we are still soldiering on and need the help
of companies and people like yourself to help us in this last desperate push to have
raised £50,000 within Ricky’s 10 year anniversary year.

Ricky was just a good lad, he loved his rugby, was working
on a weekend earning a bit of pocket money, he had just started at Park Lane
College studying Electrical Installation. Ricky was a fit, healthy teenager
with his whole life ahead of him, an absolute joy to be around, he had a great
personality and was a natural comic, such a popular young man. It’s a fitting
tribute to him that so many people have helped to raise so much money in his
memory.
