Story
On June 21st, the Summer Solstice, I am going to play the piano for 24 hours to raise money for Macmillan Cancer Support. This "midsummer musical marathon" will start at 10am and end at 10am on Thursday June 22nd.
I am doing this to honour the memory of a number of friends, relatives and colleagues who have died of cancer and to celebrate those who have beaten it.
The support, care, advice and love given by the Macmillan nurses is incredible and invaluable and quite literally a vital resource - but of course they are highly trained specialists and that requires money. It costs £191 to fund one nurse for a day. I am not going to set an amount I want to raise, just as much as possible - One nurse for a month therefore costs £5921, for a year £69715....
During the 24 hours I will be joined at times by a fabulous array of friends and colleagues including Lesley Garrett, James Gilchrist, Ashley Riches, Bryan Evans, Ellie Fagg and Tom Norris, Sally Pendelbury, Joanne McGahon, the Choir of Hendon St Mary's and a fantastic cast to give an impromptu concert performance of Cosi Fan Tutte involving Eleanor Dennis, Annie Mulroy, Nick Pritchard, George Humphreys, Jane Harrington and Tim Dickinson.
So as well as solo piano music there will be song, chamber music, piano duets, choral works, opera and late night jazz, all accompanied by me!
The event will be held in St Mary's Church, Hendon, NW4 4JT - the church will be open to the public throughout the 24 hrs and all are welcome at any point!
