Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit our JustGiving page.

YAY! We have finished - completing 22 laps within 24 hours and 123 miles. We even netted a third place award for our category of Mixed Pair. A hard but ultimately enjoyable experience. Thank you so much to everyone who contributed sponsorship. The final total  will stay open for a few months yet.

When the starting gun sounds at midday on the 22nd of July 2017, one half of Team Coggin will set off on their first lap of a 9k circuit on the Bathurst Estate near Cirencester. 24 hours later either Ian or myself will roll across the finish line. We anticipate that we will cover at least 100 miles over the 24 hour period, aiming to split that evenly between us, swopping over every few circuits.

Whilst this shall be a challenge for us both, we hope to raise money for the Cystic Fibrosis Trust who ceaselessly work hard to ensure that cystic fibrosis is less of a challenge for sufferers, such as Jake who is the son of old friends. Jake was diagnosed with CF when he was two years old, and the CF Trust have been invaluable to his family in assisting them and him in growing up and living with the condition. Jake is now fifteen and his own participation in sport helps him day to day in maintaining good health.

Thank-you for all money donated.

If you want to know more about CF - check out the CF Trust Web Site, but here are the basics.

What is cystic fibrosis?

Cystic fibrosis is one of the UK's most common life-threatening inherited diseases. Cystic fibrosis is caused by a single defective gene. As a result, the internal organs, especially the lungs and digestive system, become clogged with thick sticky mucus resulting in chronic infections and inflammation in the lungs and difficulty digesting food.

Life expectancy?

When the CF Trust began in 1964, people with cystic fibrosis would be lucky to live past five years old. Now half of those with the condition in the UK will live to celebrate their 40th birthday, and a baby born with the condition today can expect to live even longer.

How common is cystic fibrosis?

Around 10,500 people in the UK have cystic fibrosis, that's 1 in every 2,500 babies born. Cystic fibrosis affects around 100,000 people around the world.

What causes cystic fibrosis?

Cystic fibrosis is a genetic condition. One person in 25 carries the faulty cystic fibrosis gene usually without knowing, over two million people in the UK. If two carriers have a baby, the child has a one in four chance of having cystic fibrosis.
