Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
BDD (Body Dysmorphic Disorder) is a debilitating mental health disorder in which a person experiences extreme anxiety about an imagined defect or slight imperfection in their appearance. This preoccupation with their perceived flaws can cause considerable emotional distress, leading to social isolation, problems with work and relationships, depression and suicide – in fact, BDD has one of the highest suicide rates of all mental health conditions.
BDD remains a poorly understood condition. Contrary to popular belief, it is not about extreme vanity. In fact, it is the antithesis of vanity as most BDD sufferers believe themselves to be hideously ugly or even disfigured. Nor is it exclusive to young women but affects both men and women equally, across all age groups, including elderly populations.
Many people with BDD go undiagnosed and so never get the treatment or support they need. The BDD Foundation is the only charity in the world exclusively dedicated to raising awareness and alleviating the suffering caused by BDD. It runs various support groups and provides information on treatment options for people affected by BDD and their families, all on a very limited budget.
Please give generously to help this small but effective charity continue its vitally important work.
