Story
"I used to get out all the time. Now it's very hard: I
hate being stuck inside. Getting out with North
London Cares has made me feel so much brighter."
Patricia, 90, Archway
I (Anna) started volunteering with North London Cares last year, and have so much fun at all the events they put on. From film clubs to pub games, it's a great way to meet older neighbours and make friends too. It's easy to feel isolated in a big city like London, and even more so the older and less mobile you get.
Did you know that loneliness is as harmful for you as smoking 15 cigarettes a day?
And that lonely people have a 64% increased chance of developing clinical dementia?
But North London Cares are a small charity, and they need every donation they can get to grow, develop and welcome more neighbours to their events.
That's why Robbie and I are doing a sponsored 50km (that's 31 miles!) walk this summer with other NLC volunteers: from the Olympic Park in London to Braughing, which is halfway to Cambridge. We've started training already, and we need to raise half our fundraising money by the 23rd May so please do give what you can.
£20 could help fund a Social Club, such as a film night, games afternoon or arts and crafts session
£40 could help us match a volunteer with an older neighbor through the Love Your Neighbour scheme
£150 could provide transportation for a day out with our older neighbours, such as a trip to a pub or local restaurant.
Thanks so much,
Anna and Robbie x
