Story
Encephalitis is inflammation of the brain. The inflammation is caused either by an infection invading the brain (infectious); or through the immune system attacking the brain in error (post-infectious or autoimmune Encephalitis).
As a clinical psychologist, I am a big supporter of the NHS, and feel proud to live in a country where we have this, but I am also acutely aware that the NHS can not do it all. Working with children who have survived Encephalitis (and other causes of brain injury) makes me appreciate the strength and endurance that they and their families have. I also have the opportunity to see what role the Encephalitis Society has in supporting families - Encephalitis can affect anyone, at any time - knowing that there is someone who understands, and who can offer information, support, and access to resources, can really help individuals and their families to stay strong.
I have signed up to the 10K so that I can run around Bristol waving the flag for children with Encephalitis (and other causes of brain injury) and their families - please join me in this endeavour by supporting the Encephalitis Society.
**Update: In addition, I am cutting off my long locks and donating these to another children's charity - The Little Princess Trust - who provide real hair wigs for children undergoing treatment for cancer. You can sponsor me via this Just Giving page and all funds raised still go directly to the Encephalitis Society.
The Encephalitis Society aims to raise awareness and support research to help ensure that we live in a world where Encephalitis is as rare as it possibly can be given its eradication is unlikely.
The Society also aims to ensure that those affected, and their families, have access to early diagnosis, excellent management of their condition, timely access to rehabilitation and other forms of social support.
