Story
Three years ago my sister Elaine took part in The Great North Run, the largest half marathon in the world, a distance of 13.1 miles. At the time I said, and I’m quoting, “you’d never get me doing this”. Yet here I am, a few months shy of reaching state pension age doing exactly that!
I have never done anything like this before - surely it’s a one off!
We are doing it together this time under the banner of Team Gilchrist.
The Great North Run 2021 marks the 40th anniversary of this major regional event. The route is different this year (Covid compliance measures), giving us the chance to cross the iconic Tyne Bridge not once but TWICE.
We are supporting St. Oswald’s Hospice, Newcastle upon Tyne, the place where our Mother spent her last days peacefully, surrounded by love and dedicated nursing care. Like so many other charities in these extraordinary times, donations and fundraising are more important than ever.
For many years I have volunteered in their tea tent at the finish of The Great North Run, serving teas, sausage rolls and cakes - don’t forget the cakes - to returning Great North Runners. Now I am stepping out of the tent and putting on the running shoes ... as I don’t own any such items I had to buy them specially!
If you are able to support me in this endeavour, and the Hospice, you will greatly benefit a wide range of people who receive essential services through their kind, efficient, and compassionate services. It would also encourage me to do some training ...... Training? I knew there was something I’d forgotten!
My final thought - that I get back to the tea tent before the cakes run out!
Many thanks.
Ann
