Story
Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
I'm Ann and In 1987 I was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes, meaning my body no longer produced the insulin vital to turn food into energy my body could use. Over the course of a week I lost a stone and a half in weight as I became unwell.
I started with syringes, and a blood test meter that took several minutes ... I progressed to pens, needles and testing in about 30 seconds ... now I have an insulin pump and it only takes 5 seconds to test, and both pump and meter hook up to my laptop so I can see how my control is progressing. I also have a continuous glucose monitor which I self fund, so I use it when I have funds available.
The huge progress in diabetes care and technology is contributed to by the vital research and education that charities including JDRF fund.
On 10 August this year I ran my first ultra marathon ... the 50k Salisbury 54321. To get through the race it took 9 blood tests, 5 gels, 2 Nakd bars and a couple of peanut butter and jam sandwiches as well as 9 or 10 tiny insulin boluses to make sure I could use the energy from the food effectively. (And a couple of very black toenails!)
On 28 September I will be running the ECF Monster Ultra - Ely to Cambridge and back 68k, then from 7-9 November I will be running the Druid's Challenge, 84 miles in 3 days along the Ridgeway.
Please show your support for my efforts and help me raise much needed funds for JDRF.
