AKF has partnered with the European Commission to prepare people in Northern Afghanistan for drastic climate change: protecting crops, water sources and livelihoods for 60,000 families. Your donations will ensure they have a safer future.

Story

Thank you for visiting my JustGiving page.

From next week, I will be walking part of the Camino de Santiago to fundraise to help to build resilience to climate change in North-East Afghanistan.

Why?

The communities in this region lead precarious livesThey are already exposed to a harsh climate - heatwaves, droughts as well as reduced snow capping, which in turn results in floods, causes the destruction of property and crops, erodes vital farmland, and all too often, leads to loss of life. As climate change intensifies, scientists predict weather patterns will become more volatile. The people here simply do not have the resources to combat the impact of this.

What and How?

AKF has partnered with the EU Commission to provide specialist assistance to approximately 60,000 families (420,000 people). Working mainly with women and youth in affected areas, the project will help to improve farming techniques, develop new crops, build physical barriers against natural disasters, and rehabilitate forests and farmland. Sustainability is central to the project's aims, as is developing local expertise, in order that important skills can be shared between communities.

The Fantastic Multiplier Effect!

Every donation will help to ensure that the people of North-East Afghanistan have a safer future.

For each £1 raised, the European Commission will donate £9 to the project. So, a donation of £10 becomes £100 for the project. That's enough to provide year-round access to water for a family, or provide drought resistant crops to 100 households. £20 will become £200. That's enough to plant 1000 trees which will support new livelihood opportunities and prevent soil erosion, or help form and train a women's group to lead reforestation.

All the money raised will go directly to the project, so my target of £3,000, would mean £30,000, for the project. That will make an enormous difference to the future of these communities.

And just so that you know..

AKF works to improve the quality of life of marginalised communities around the world without regard to faith, origin or gender. See www.akdn.org

Thank you so much

Best wishes
