Story
It's all about running, read on to find out more!
Update: I'm almost there Manchester 10k was followed by 6.5 gruelling hours on a treadmill reaching the goal of 39 miles and recently the 13.2 miles of the Great North Run only the Loch Ness Marathon( 26miles) to go
I still need your help in raising funds for a very worthwhile charity. Alzheimers Society is the UK's leading care and research charity for people with dementia and those who care for them.
A few facts: Over 700,000 people in the UK have dementia
1 in 3 older people will end their lives with dementia
Dementia is one of the main causes of disability later in life , AHEAD of CANCER, CARDIOVASCULAR DISEASE AND STROKE!!!
1 in 6 people over the age of 80 are effeted by dementia
1 in 20 people aged 70-80 are effected by dementia
There are 15,000 YOUNGER people with dementia in the UK
When a person is diagnosed with dementia it is usual for the family and loved ones to act as carers whilst observing the cruel destruction of this disease. Respite breaks become a necessity in later stages for both parties. Memories are lost, recognition of loved ones does not happen and personalities change. To lose the ability to recognise a loved one that you have spent the majority of your life with can be hard to understand and accept. Although there are many types of dementia they have it is the progressive degeneration that they have in common which affects individuals at varying rates.
My aim is to raise funds to help support a charity that provides vital services, for example
£100 will allows the helpline to be answered and essential information packs to be sent out
£500 pays for 65 hours of a support workers time- allowing people to understand their diagnosis and offer support to carers
£1000 could go towards respite breaks for two people with dementia reducing the pressure at home with carers
£5000 Could fund the carers contact programme for younger people with dementia for a year
My plan? To run, starting with the Manchester City 10K (July 4th) then onto the Bupa Great North Run (Sep 19th) and finally the Loch Ness Marathon (Oct 3). The more i can potentially raise the faster i can hopefully run!! Other events are planned including a treadmill endurance challenge, check back later for more details. Marathons hurt but its temporary unlike living with a diagnosis of dementia. If you can help, then please do.......
For Dad and the many other special people sadly affected by dementia
