Story
Me doing a Marathon???!! Well I NEVER imagined I would be signing up for this!
I used to hate running.......In triathlons my running ALWAYS lets me down. Last April, I joined Forfar Road Runners, determined to change that and improve my running.
I used to struggle to run 1 mile, but ran my first 10k last May, followed by the Forfar 10k in August and the Glasgow Half Marathon in September. I have since entered other races and have gone from hating running to being hooked! I was thrilled to be presented with the trophy for Best Newcomer in January this year at the FRR Annual Presentation.
My running improvement is partly down to my running buddies and coaches at Forfar Road Runners - they give such a lot of advice and encouragement. A special mention has to go to my ever tolerant husband, Hugh, who has toddled with me on many a run (thankfully for him, my pace has improved!). Also a special mention to Sam, one of my running buddies aged 78yrs with plenty left in the tank! Thanks goes to my friend Karen, who fills me in with all the news on our runs and provides the cuppa and cake at "Karen's Cafe" afterwards.
This year a good number of Forfar Road Runner's are taking on the challenge of the Loch Ness Marathon......not the easiest, quite undulating...but definitely the most scenic.
Why am I raising money for Macmillan Cancer Support?
Like many of us, my family has been affected by cancer, some have fought and survived it, some have lost their battle. Macmillan Cancer Support provides support to sufferers and their family at what can be a very difficult time, emotionally and financially.
My Loch Ness Marathon Challenge is in memory of a wonderful mother in law - Ishbel, who sadly died in 2010 after a 7 month battle with Mesothelioma. Despite this dreadful illness, she never complained. Macmillan Nurses were there to support her through her battle.
Also in memory of a good friend and neighbour, Mike Green, who sadly died last August following a short battle with cancer.
In my thoughts will be all the fighters and survivors! My step-dad Drew, who was diagnosed with a very rare cancer - Waldenstroms Macroglobulinaemia in 1995 and has gone through 2 courses of chemotherapy over the years. My nephew Kevin, who was diagnosed with a very rare sarcoma in 2002 aged 16yrs and endured tough treatment to win his battle. My niece- in- law Wendy, who was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2009 aged 24yrs, and last but not least, my friend Karen, diagnosed with breast cancer in 2010 and running this marathon with me!
I am proud of every one of them...for what they have gone through and the positive attitude they have held.
If you have read this far I am hoping that you will donate!!! Even if it is the minimum £2 donation....all these £2's will add up and make a difference. Please help me reach my target for a worthy cause. You never know when cancer may touch your life.
Thank you
Angie
