Story
Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page. Back in 2006 I participated in the Cycle India challenge. I managed to complete and raised over £3,000 for charity.
In 2011 I am aiming to complete the cycle Vietnam-Cambodia challenge.
The challenge is to not only get fit enough and complete the taxing ride but to raise £3,100 for the charity.
Why is it so important to me?
My mum underwent many many years of fertility treatment to no avail, I remained an only child :0(
I lost my mum to cancer at the age of 62, she had her first diagnosis of cancer initially at age 42, but with advances in treatments managed to have another 20 years of life.
Following her death I underwent genetic counselling and had preventative surgery to reduce my risk. So far I am cancer free.
For the institute to continue with groundbreaking research into womens & childrens health, its needs much needed funds.
That's why, yet again, I am putting myself through this, its not a holiday its a gruelling cycle ride. Not only do I have to try to raise the funds for the institute, I need to get my very unfit and unhealthy body into shape!!!!
Heres the itineray for the ride.....
Day 1 Saigon – Tay Ninh 70km approx
Day 2 Tay Ninh – Cambodian border -Svay Rieng 80 km approx
Day 3 Transfer Svay Rieng – Neak Lung 65km approx
Day 4 Cycle Neak Lung - Kompong Cham 107km approx
Day 5 Kompong Cham – Kompong Thom 110km approx (10km offroad)
Day 6 Kompong Thom – Ancient Bridge – Angkor Wat 60km approx
So heres to the next 20 months of hard graft, remember this is not a HOLIDAY!! its an extremly hard challenge , not only do we have to raise the donations for the charity but we have also got to get fit enough to cycle the distance over difficult terrain.
And heres what the Institute does with all this hard earned cash...
Funds raised by Women for Women will be spent on ground-breaking medical research to improve the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of a range of devastating conditions affecting women and their babies. This includes brain injury, miscarriage, infertility, cancer and genetic diseases such as cystic fibrosis and muscular dystrophy. They will also help train women scientists and clinicians of the highest calibre to work on major research projects with the fundamental aim of ensuring women’s ongoing good health throughout their lives and to help more women have a healthy pregnancy and baby.
Women for Women is administered by the Institute of Obstetrics & Gynaecology Trust. Professor Winston is Chairman of both.
