How it came to Be

Having never kayaked before we really did start from scratch. We started our journey back in October 2009 when we decided a basic qualification would be useful and successfully completed our one star qualification. I would like to thank Lee, Dave and Glynnis and LVCC for all the kindness they have shown us, with their unofficial training, encouragement, cups of tea and allowing us to store our Kayak.

We spent the next few months practicing in a bulky play kayak- now fondly nicknamed "The Tub". Having entered a race and finishing fourth from bottom we decided that even our ample frames needed to use a racing kayak! You may recall that we hard a hard winter last year and although we cracked the ice a few times training was difficult and the delivery of our new racing boat delayed.

With the race in April our racing kayak didn’t turn up until February. Although still cold we were excited. On our first attempt we managed four strokes before falling in the icy Lea Valley River. It took us 3 weeks and many swims before we managed to make it 300 yards still dry. Unfortunately by this time the 2010 race was beyond our grasps.

Feeling slightly disappointed we got to grips with the kayak over the summer and we are now gearing our training towards the 2011 race.

The Race

Think of it as doing the London marathon 5 times on your hands!!! Devizes Westminster International Canoe Race is one of the ultimate tests of endurance. Travelling for 125 miles in kayak or canoe from Devizes to Westminster, It pushes competitors to their physical and mental limits. For More information please see http://www.dwrace.org.uk/

 

The Charity

 

We are both passionate and committed to changing the lives of others through education, support and engaging with those less fortunate than ourselves. As Matthew is a musician and music has helped him through some difficult times we have decided to raise Funds for Nordoff- Robbins.  Nordoff Robbins do some excellent work transforming lives of less fortunate people through music therapy.
