Story
I am running the York 10K on Sunday 5th August in memory of my dad, Stuart Robertson, who died on Monday 19th September 2011 of Multiple System Atrophy. He was diagnosed with Parkinsons on 12 November 2007 but unfortunately his symptoms progressed rapidly and during 2011 his Consultant began to talk about the possibility of another diagnosis, Multiple System Atrophy. This is a progressive neurological disease which causes various areas of the brain to atrophy which in turn causes the loss of control of movement and balance and automatic functions. There is no way to definitively diagnose this disease until after death and there is no treatment which will alleviate symptoms in most sufferers and also no cure.
The Trust researches treatments and cures and also offers information and support to people with the disease and their families.
I'm not naturally a sporty person and I have done only one 10K run before... seven years ago... so I am excited to find out how I will get on. Don't worry I am training as hard as I can!
