Story
Hi all,
As some of you may be aware, my sister is disabled, and as an adult her disability has held her back from being able to secure employment through the normal route. Prior to Covid she did have a job at a preschool which she loved, this was a special placement that was made available specifically for a disabled person.
When Covid hit, a lot of disabled people were kept indoors away from their work, family and friends, more so than most. Over this period there were long stretches where I wasn’t allowed to see my sister, but after around six months I was allowed to visit her in a local park, whilst wearing a mask and keeping 2 metres away. The stringent Covid rules that were in place for people who were in assisted living led to a lot of disabled people losing their jobs (including my sister). Unfortunately, this has inevitably led to an increase in unemployment for disabled people. However, fortunately for my sister, Shelly, she has now found employment at a local library, which we are so pleased about.
The charity, Scope, who we are supporting, campaigns relentlessly to create a fairer society for disabled people, with the hope that in the future there is not a requirement for disabled people to be put on a list to obtain a ‘special job’, as and when they become available. Rather than employers looking at the things they struggle with, they look at the things they can do and how they can contribute to the workplace, and this charity works tirelessly to try to achieve this. The charity also provides advice to help disabled people kick start training and employment.
It is so important to me that charities like this continue to receive funding. A lot of disabled people already work and contribute to society, however a lot don’t, as they don’t have the opportunity to. Having the option to make a contribution to society for disabled people of all levels means so much more to them than just a job, it gives them a purpose, therefore to everyone who is doing the Tough Mudder event and to everyone who is helping to raise funds, thank you.
I would really like to express that all donations will be greatly appreciated. The donations will not only motivate the team towards the finish line, but will also help this amazing charity continue with its great work!
Kind Regards
Ben
