This request is set up in memory of our lovely Mum, Jean Davis, who was diagnosed with Vascular Dementia in 2008.
For those who do not know, Dementia is a degenerative illness which usually first appears as forgetfulness. Over time, it affects the memory, thinking, language, perception, judgement, and behaviour. It also leaves the person affected with confusion and anxiety, which often leads to depression. This in turn leads to isolation from people who are less understanding of its debilitating and progressive nature.
We were determined to ensure that, through our love and care, Mum lived as independently as possible and enjoyed a high quality of life. The help and support provided by the professional organisations assisted us greatly to achieve this, for which we are very grateful.
Without the support of Demetia Uk , we would have had little understanding of the illness, and we would not have been able to help Mum to lead such a dignified and happy life.
By December last year Mum had become frail and had a fall. She was immediately hospitalised, and underwent a hip operation. However, the accompanying trauma caused her Dementia to accelerate. This meant that she became more confused and anxious, was unable to understand how to remain mobile and safe, and she subsequently developed an infection.
The onset of advanced Dementia meant that her ability to recognise that she needed to eat and drink was greatly impaired. As a direct result, the infection could not be eradicated, and she eventually passed away peacefully on 22nd March 2012.
Your support in helping people affected by Dementia is vital. It will not go away on its own. Around 1 million people will be diagnosed with Dementia by 2025, and a further 1 million people will be thrust into the role of being a carer.
At present 25 million people in the UK have a close friend or family member with Dementia. That’s a staggering 42% of the population!
Dementia UK is a national charity committed to improving quality of life for all people affected by Dementia. They promote and develop specialist Admiral Nursing, and good practice in Dementia care. They provide high quality training for professionals working with people with Dementia and their carers. They work in partnership with the NHS, social services, other voluntary groups. This enables them to be able to contribute to national policy on Dementia issues, and influence practice and policy development.
Their work and support, in our experience, has been invaluable. We cannot thank them enough, and can only hope that in promoting their charity, on behalf of our Mum, they will be able to continue their fantastic work!
A donation of £33 will enable an Admiral Nurse to provide specialist emotional and practical support to any family affected by Dementia via Admiral Nursing DIRECT.
£50 will pay for a professional working in health and social care to attend a specialist dementia course run by Dementia UK training
£80 will equip a carer with media and public speaking skills to enable them to speak out about their experiences to educate both professionals and the public
Any donation always makes a difference, and will be gratefully received.
Please would you also pass these details on to your family and friends, in order that they be made aware of the good work that is performed. The more people who know about Dementia UK , the greater the support for such a worthy charity, and the easier it will make it for people who are likely to be affected by this illness in the future.
Brenda, Gill and Angie thank you for your consideration and support.
