On 23rd September 2023, I will be attempting to ride from the Angel of the North, near Newcastle, to Angel, London in 24hrs. The route is 500km long and takes in 2,500m of elevation. Why on Earth would I do such a thing? I am riding this for the Wren Project, which is a cause very close to my heart.
The Wren Project offers free, ongoing, one to one, listening support to people with autoimmune disease in the UK. They respond to the emotional challenges caused by a diagnosis of autoimmune disease. In the UK, 6%, or 4 million people, are known to live with at least one autoimmune condition. There are over 80 identified autoimmune diseases, with incidence rising by 3 - 9% each year.
I am riding 500km alone to try and understand the pain and, often isolation, felt by people struggling with autoimmune disease. Also, I would like to test myself and my mental resilience. This is by far the furthest I have ever attempted to ride non-stop and therefore there are no guarantees of success - I'll be pushing myself beyond my limits!
Your support will be crucial in helping me endure the pain and stay in the saddle. And remember, my employer Bloomberg LP have agreed to match donations dollar for dollar up to $5,000, meaning every pound donated becomes two for the Wren Project. I know times are tough for some, but anything you can donate would be an incredible lift. Please dig deep!
