Story
I am Andy, otherwise known as PS 24306 Wakely. I work on the front line of Policing for Hampshire Constabulary, I also happen to have Multiple Sclerosis.
I was diagnosed with MS in 2006, the same year I joined the Police. I do have lasting symptoms, I have foot drop on my right side which means I am prone to stumble or lose my balance (I haven't fallen yet). I wear a brace to help with this. I have severe fatigue and I am prone to pull muscles, particularly calf and hamstrings. At the start of this adventure, I cannot run a mile without one of them going but although I have a disability I see no reason why this should ever stop anyone achieving anything.
I have had MS for 11.5 years. When I was diagnosed I was told that in 15 years there was a 50/50 chance of being in a wheelchair. I decided then that every day was precious, every day should be lived to the full with no regrets. Also it meant that there was a 50/50 chance that I won't be 😆.
I have been lucky, my symptoms are manageable and although sometimes I am in pain, this is nothing compared to what some of the amazing people I have met through the MS society and support services go through. It is for them that I am going to try and do this and aim to raise as much money as possible.
Can I run all the way? No
Will I beat Mo Farah? Unlikely,
Will I find a way to get around 26.2 miles in London? Yes
Will I give up? Never.
