Many of you are aware of the tragic story of my dear high school friend, Ramona Mendoza Johnston.  Ramona and I met in junior high and became good friends in high school.  We shared many great high school experiences, went to SDSU together, were bridesmaids in each others weddings and shared early events in our children's lives.

Shortly after my family moved to the Bay area, Ramona was diagnosed with Huntingtons Disease.   When I would visit San Diego, I would be sure to see Ramona.  In the early years of her diagnosis, my trips were more frequent.  I would pick her up for lunch or take her to Starbucks to catch up.  Due to my life changes, my visits became less frequent and during that time Ramona moved in to Edgemoor Hospital.

Ramona has been living at Edgemoor for over ten years.  She can no longer walk, talk, chew or swallow.  This beautiful spirit, who once was an energetic, happy-go-lucky, vibrant member of our group of friends is now unable to share her thoughts and stories.

Huntington's disease is a hereditary, degenerative brain disorder for which there is no effective treatment or cure. HD is a debilitating disease that combines symptoms of Parkinsons, ALS and Alzeimer's. HD slowly diminishes the affected individual's ability to walk, talk, eat and reason. Children of a parent with HD have a 50% chance of inheriting this deadly disease.
