Story
In 2012 I invented the sport of extreme hockey dribbling with the intention of raising money for charity. Since then I've dribbled a hockey ball in the London Marathon, dribbled the 3 peaks, dribbled a ball from Cardiff to London and more recently in 2019, I dribbled a ball up to 18,000O feet on Annapurna in the Himalayas. As a wise 59 year old sage, my plan was to hang up my dribbling stick once and for all........that was until I heard about the Going for Gold project!
I was part of the England and Great Britain Mens hockey training squads in the 1980s. I was lucky enough to play alongside athletes like Steve Batchelor and Imran Sherwani. Imran is a personal friend and we both served as police officers. Imran's subsequent dementia diagnosis and the way that he and wife Louise are tackling this horrible disease is inspirational. Several years ago, we also lost my mother in law who had been battling dementia for 10 years.
I'm in awe of what Steve and the team are doing so wanted to do my bit to support Imran and Louise and also the research into this debilitating condition that seems to blight so many families.
So, it's time for one last hockey dribble!
I'm also inspired by all that Alzheimers Research UK are doing: "Our vision is a world where people are free from the fear, harm and heartbreak of dementia. We are the UK's leading dementia research charity, dedicated to causes, diagnosis, prevention, treatment and cure. Backed by our passionate scientists and supporters, we’re challenging the way people think about dementia, uniting the big thinkers in the field and funding the innovative science that will deliver a cure."
