Story
On 16 June I was fortunate enough to be chosen as an Olympic torchbearer in Sunderland. I now wish to share my experience and the awesome torch with as many people as possible in this Olympic year whilst also benefiting a really worthwhile charity.
My good friend Michael was unable to watch me as he is currently receiving treatment for cancer at the Beatson West of Scotland Cancer Centre. Over the past 12 months he has been battling a rare form of cancer called Ewing’s Sarcoma. He has undergone really intensive chemotherapy which had some really horrible side effects. He has had part of his left lung and some ribs removed. On top of that he has undergone six weeks of intensive radiotherapy. Fortunately he is weeks away from completing treatment and all signs look positive.
Friends of the Beatson is a centre for inpatients that provides alternative therapies and a place for some quiet relaxation away from the hustle and bustle of the wards. Michael has nominated this charity as they have helped him a great deal since he was diagnosed. They helped him through the process of losing his hair (well what hair he had left!!!!) when he decided to shave it off. They taught him relaxation techniques to cope with the nausea effects of chemo. They provided chiropody and reflexology at his bedside when requested.
All this at no cost to Michael or any other patient currently being treated at the hospital. They are entirely self-funded and rely on your donations to continue this much needed support.
For your opportunity to have the torch at your event please donate as much as you can for Friends of the Beatson.
