The Perfume Shop is fundraising for their chosen charity partner, Alzheimer's Research UK, to help find a cure for dementia!

Story

Over the years I’ve supported Alzheimer’s Research UK as an employee of The Perfume Shop which has included taking part in a number of fundraising events which include the UK Three Peaks, Kilimanjaro and Running Down Dementia.

A couple of years ago my nan was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s and a form of dementia, news in truth that at the time I struggled to accept. My nan is an incredible person, and she continues to fight everyday in the pursuit of longevity.

It’s incredibly sad that none of us need to look very far to see the impact of this truly awful disease that affects our very being and eats away at the things we hold most dear, our memories.

I also know other people impacted by this disease, neighbours of mine, friends of mine, some are still fighting but others have sadly passed.

It’s for these reasons and more that I will be trekking to Everest Base Camp in October to raise money for Alzheimer’s Research UK, an amazing charity that funds research into helping to find a cure for Alzheimer’s and various forms of dementia.

I chose to trek to Everest Base Camp as after a number of running challenges, I wanted to do something ‘big’, something that would encourage ‘more support’, ‘more donations’, something ‘bigger than I’d done before’ and something that I hope will give me ‘lots of support for ARUK’.

The trek starts and ends at Lukla airport, where I will fly to from Kathmandu, Nepal. With just a 527m runway sitting on the edge of a mountain, the flight into Lukla will be an experience in itself!

The trek will be a total of 130km (80 miles), 65km (40 miles) each way and will take 12 days, 9 days to reach EBC and 3 days to return to Lukla Airport.

The trek will start at high altitude of 2,845m, descending to 2,652m and then it’s a continuous incline to reach base camp at a very high altitude of 5,364m and then up to the highest point of the trek at 5,554m to hopefully get some stunning views of Everest.
