Hello!
For those that don't know, I'm going to be travelling to Sri Lanka in April 2006 in order to help rebuild the houses that were destroyed by the tsunami back in December 2004. Habitat for Humanity runs a number of programs that allows people from all over the world to travel to the affected areas to lend a hand providing much-needed housing for the tens of thousands how have now been homeless for over a year.
Much of the £1.8 billion in aid given to Sri Lanka as a result of the tsunami has yet to get through to victims due to long, drawn out procedures and burocracy being imposed by the government in Colombo. As a result, Habitat for Humanity launched an emergency housing appeal with an aim to build 10,000 houses for victims.
The Reuters Foundation are very kindly paying for my flights and accommodation, so every penny of the money I raise will go directly towards someone's house. Also, if you are a UK taxpayer, an extra 28% in tax is added to your donation! Once there, I (along with about 12 other volunteers) will be working long hard days in a harsh climate in order to get as much done as possible as we are only there for a week.
