1 in 3 people born in the UK this year will develop dementia in their lifetime. There are 850,000 people with dementia in the UK. This will increase to over one million by 2025 and over two million by 2050. There are currently four cancer researchers for every one dementia researcher.
This has always been a subject that has been with me throughout my life. I was just 14 years of age when I found out about this horrible condition that effected my family and seen how much stress and heartache this caused for everyone involved.
I was young and didn’t understand the condition all that well at the time. I was confused and worried that someone close to me, my uncle George, who I grew up with in my life, could change drastically in persona and become a shadow of his former self.
The distress it caused on the family as a whole has always been at the forefront of my mind. I guess it’s the not knowing side of things that confused me.
A few years later, a dear friend of mine in Belfast, Northern Ireland was going through this traumatic experience with her father. It means a lot to me that I can also raise funds in loving memory of John.
I know of many people in my life who have had to come to terms with losing a loved one to this cruel disease. I’m running this half marathon for them, for their families and for their friends.
Uncle George and John Moore, i'm running this for your beautiful memories
