Story
I have a volunteering role in Tanzania and wanted to let you know about an excellent opportunity to improve harvest yields for subsistence farmers.
Poor harvests remain a constant famine challenge in the semi arid central Tanzanian region and impact 50% of the population. 68% live under the UN absolute poverty income level of US $2 per day.
The Diocese of Central Tanganyika (DCT) has just completed a pilot program in 17 subsistence farming based villages and the results over a 3 year period have been very impressive.
The pilot program has DOUBLED harvest yields through persuading farmers, many of whom are women, to give up 20% of their land to grow non feed crops which fertilise the soil for the next year.
The pilot program also eradicated 30% of harvest loss through training farmers to bury their grain sacks in plastic lined pits under their houses. This kills the grain eating insects living in the sacks, saving 100kg of harvest per family per year.
DCT now wants to roll out the program to its remaining 180 villages and provide food security for over 1 million people.
It costs £375 to educate a Tanzanian Agriculture trainer and have them operational with subsistence farmers. DCT needs to recruit 20 trainers.
Your donation is much appreciated.
As they say in Tanzania ... Asante Sana ....
Or in the UK ..... thanks very much
