I'm cycling 500km over 4 days from London to Paris to help make myeloma history! Myeloma research is critically important because myeloma is a complex cancer with no known cure. It's also relapsing and remitting which means many patients are in desperate need of that next treatment.
Agathe, my beloved wife was first diagnosed with MGUS in 1989. Apart from annual blood tests, it didn’t interfere with how she lived her life, but in March 2018 she was diagnosed with myeloma after exhibiting the typical symptoms and ending up in A&E.
Despite the wonderful care she received, the myeloma returned within 9 months of her autologous stem-cell transplant and she passed away in February 2020.
We had talked about doing this ride together, but I shall now be riding on my own in her memory. I’m hoping to raise as much as possible so that there is greater awareness of myeloma among GPs, earlier diagnosis, ever better treatments with fewer unpleasant side-effects and ultimately a cure.
