On 3rd December 2004 our dear Dad passed away after 2 long years of suffering with this disease. He was our Mum's "rock" as she called him and her true soul mate and lifelong partner for over 50 years. Never too busy to help anyone or offer advice he was loved and admired by many and is sorely missed.
On 28th May this year I shall be cycling solo from Cherbourg to Ouistreham, via the main D-Day landing beaches and many memorial sites in the area, Omaha Beach, Point du Hoc, Arromanches, Pegasus Bridge etc.
It's only 130 miles from A to B, but I shall be doing around 170 on this circuitous route. Plus I may be spending a day with a keen cyclist who lives in France, so I expect the total to be in excess of 200. There will be NO SUPPORT VEHICLE and no hotels, I'm taking all my kit with me and shall be camping out each night.
Whilst this would be easy for a fit young man I am exactly the opposite at 46 years of age and 2 stone overweight, so it could prove difficult. Many of you know I cycle to work every day, but that is only 8.7 miles each way, 60-70 miles per day is a different thing altogether as you have to regulate your protein intake.
I shall be doing this on my own to raise money for the Prostate Cancer charity in memory of my Dad and those thousands of others who suffer from the disease that kills 10000 men each year in the UK, that's ONE EVERY HOUR.
Whilst none of this can bring back my Dad, or those who have perished, If I can help just ONE person live for ONE extra day then that is enough.
So please dig deep and donate now.
UPDATE.
247.63 miles were completed in just 2 1/2 days. Not a bad feat really. I've taken all the pledges off the site and have only included those that have actually been received. These will be updated as and when they come in.
Many many thanks to all those who have contributed to this worthy cause. I may be doing it again next year.
