Yorkshire Air Ambulance - "The Best Sound in the World" -Tom
Following a serious accident last Summer to my friend Tom, the Yorkshire Air Ambulance was a genuine life safer. I have always fancied taking up this kind of challenge but have been compelled to “get in the saddle” this year to ensure we Keep It Up. We always think it wont happen to me - but it can!
On 11th July 2014 Tom went for a “quick bike ride after work” and a minor slip off a grass verge led to the compound fracture (bone through the skin!) of both Tibia and Fibula; his bones were in 8 pieces. Tom was in open country near Hade Edge, with no access for any conventional ambulance . The services of the air ambulance meant that the vital support he (and his cycling partner Gary) needed arrived at the site of the accident and transferred Tom to Huddersfield Royal Infirmary. None of us dare think what would have happened if the Air Ambulance was not in existence or was unable to attend the scene, as Tom was beginning to lose a lot of blood and needed urgent medical attention.
It will be a long time before Tom is “peddling for pounds” – His leg was saved but rehabilitation is still continuing 7 months after the accident. The Bones have to re-grow, straighten and strengthen by 6cm. This means wearing a permanent metal frame for 12 months. However, thanks to the YAA he will be able to cycle again and has been given the chance for his leg to repair, in time.
