Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page. Thanks to everybody who has supported me and donated.

On Sunday 22nd May I completed the Edinburgh Marathon!!

It was a brilliant experience, marathon runners must all go through mental torchure its an amazing feeling to overcome pain and fatigue to get to the end of 26.2 miles.

My rollercoaster!

Miles 1-4 pure enjoyment atmosphere amazing Edinburgh city backdrop fantastic!

Miles 4/5 heavy downpour wind picking up but at our backs - was cold!

Mile 6 calf went - nightmare, I thought 'thats it I'm finished!' but I couldnt face telling everybody that I only made 6 miles!! so I dug in and thought I'll run until it actually totally gives way, I changed my running action and tried to concentrate on heal striking and thought get to halfway at least!

I made it to halfway! I then caught up with someone running in a Hull City shirt!(Stocky's team) there were very few fancy dress runners didnt see a single scooby do, french maid or yogi bear like London but there was a Hull City fan struggling like me!

running in pain with an injury is actually quite uplifting you realise it can be done! I knew I would suffer later though!

Miles 13/17 agony fatigue in both legs but I was thinking I did this easy in training keep going!! - City fan pulled away from me!!

at mile 17 there is a turn back towards the finish 9 miles to go and up to mile 20 I managed to run limp slowly. Just before mile 20 there is a sole destroying extra loop which is about a mile and gets you actually physically no closer to the finish - torchure!

mile 20 - 24 virtually impossible to run head wind so strong legs shot and right calf in serious pain!

Miles 24 - 26 felt like I was going to be sick! Too many energy drinks and chews trying to compensate for injured leg and tiredness. The wind was literally stopping you in your tracks seemed to be making no progress! Horrendous feelings that I was going to fail!

A help for heroes armed forces guy who I'd seen early on just ploughed past me with the same steady rhythm and 15 kilo's on his back how could I not keep going when he was making it look so easy! I chatted to other runners who were in same world of pain as me and as mile 26 got slowly nearer the wind was still there but knowing at this point I would get home was able to jog again.

The last few hundred metres were brilliant forgot all pain and tiredness and just felt relief that it was over!

As I crossed the line it all kicked back in again!!!

I ran it for Stocky, and raising money for Anthony Nolan.

Antony Nolan provided enormous help and hope to Stocky and his family in his last months and I wanted to do something to help in a small way.

Anthony Nolan is a pioneering charity that saves the lives of people with blood cancer. Every day, they use their register to match remarkable donors willing to donate their blood stem cells to people who desperately need lifesaving transplants.

I have deliberately left this fund raising effort until now as I have been nervous about my participation through out the 18 week training programme which is now complete. Last Tuesday I completed my final long run (18 miles) and am injury free, so it is only now that I am actually looking forward to the event.

I realise that these are hard times so even the smallest donation would be greatly appreciated.

Donating through JustGiving is simple, fast and totally secure. Your details are safe with JustGiving – they’ll never sell them on or send unwanted emails. Once you donate, they’ll send your money directly to the charity and make sure Gift Aid is reclaimed on every eligible donation by a UK taxpayer. So please dig deep for a final push to my target.
