Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
This is going to be one of the biggest challenges I have taken on. I have run the GNR three times before - 2012, 2013 and 2014 - dressed as Star Wars characters (Darth Vader and Stormtrooper). They were relatively challenging but this year will be a different challenge.
In December, I was diagnosed with Young Onset Parkinson's Disease. I have been under the care of the Newcastle Hospital team - who have been absolutely fantastic. The diagnosis came as a surprise even though the symptoms have been there for years and I should know better as a consultant geriatrician! However, I considered PD to be a diagnosis of the older population - therefore, didn't really consider that my symptoms were PD - even though I've had classic symptoms! It started with lack of sense of smell (end of 2014) and my walking hasn't been right for years. Last year, I developed a foot drop on my right side whilst training for the Edinburgh Marathon. That is when I saw an excellent physio who helped get me through that challenge. I did do the marathon in May 2017 but struggled with stiffness of the right hip and ankle.
My main symptoms are stiffness in right side of body - mostly hand and foot/ankle. Making it very difficult to write and type. And also I struggle to run! I get stiffness of my right hip and arm as well, which I have noticed whilst running for years. I've found Pilates helpful, started swimming and have a personal trainer. I have started treatment (Rasagiline and Sinemet) and am noticing some improvements but still a long way to go.
I've decided to do the GNR 2018 for Parkinson's UK to raise money for a great charity and is my way of telling people I have PD. I have been really touched by the support of everybody I've told. There are a number of people who are joining my running team for PD and I am hoping to add their names to my team as they get their places sorted.
It is strange being a doctor who has done PD clinics and is now a PD patient. I am recording videos of my experience with PD and will eventually post them - watch this space if you are interested in seeing these videos.
