On April 7th, less than 30 days from now, I will be taking part in the Marathon des Sables (MdS) in the Sahara Desert in Southern Morocco. The MdS ,known as "The Toughest Footrace On Earth", is an ultra-marathon covering over 250kms - six marathons - in six days. The longest single stage is over 80kms ( a double marathon) in one day. Competitors are required to be completely self-sufficient, carrying everything needed for the week, apart from water, in a 10kg backpack. Temperatures can reach in excess of 50, falling to as low as 0 at night.
I signed up for the race over a year ago, and have been training hard ever since. I am currently running between fifty and 80 miles per week, as well as regular gym and yoga sessions.
I originally signed up for this amazing race purely as a personal challenge. However, as the event approaches, it is clearly an un-miss able opportunity to raise much-needed funding for charity, and I would be enormously grateful if you might read on and consider supporting me in this. I should stress that I have funded every aspect of my participation in the MdS personally, and all of the sponsorship raised will go in full to the charity.
The charity that I have selected is the Share the Light Project, an initiative providing support, education and accomodation for children orphaned by war and disease in Zambia which is the dedicated charity for the Salesian group of schools, one of which my elder boys attend.
Any level of donation you can make will be very gratefully received and 100% of it will reach the Share the Light project.
Thank you for taking the time to read this and for any support you are able to give.
Andrew
