Story
So finally, I'm doing the whole five days of a Refugee Tales walk to raise money for Gatwick Detainees Welfare group (GDWG). In 2019 I did one day of the walk. In 2020 I signed up to do 5 days but it was cancelled due to Covid so I visited 25 museums online instead. In 2021 the walk was only for 2 days and we got to sleep in comfy beds in Canterbury. Now it's back to a five day linear walk, sleeping on the floor of village halls. I am excited to be part of the full experience at last!
GDWG is a small charity that makes a big difference to people held in immigration detention at Gatwick and after detention too. People in detention are held indefinitely and the uncertainty of how long they will be detained has a terrible impact on mental and physical health. For over 25 years GDWG visitors have been offering friendship to strangers, bearing witness to the realities of detention and making weekly visits to people who would otherwise be isolated. The stories of people who have been detained are shared in four volumes of 'Refugee Tales' published by Comma Press and every year on a long walk the stories are shared in evening events. This is a tough time for small charities, so please show your support for those whose plight is frequently invisible and give generously to GDWG and Refugee Tales.
