Jumpstart my Service Year 2023 · 1 June 2023 to 1 June 2024 ·
Jumpstart the Anchorage JV community! These volunteers have dedicated a year of their lives to serve with JVC Northwest. As such, they have committed to living the four values of Community, Simple Living, Social & Ecological Justice, and Spirituality. Your gift goes into a communal pool which helps support their formation and keep fees low for the nonprofits they serve. Help them reach their goal of receiving at least 12 donations of any amount to their page.
Meet the Anchorage JVs:
Katie (she/her) is from Mountain Top, PA and will be serving as a Youth Education & Employment Specialist with Covenant House Alaska.
"I serve because I seek to encounter other people in relationships of mutual understanding and spiritual, physical, and mental growth. Serving is how I become more in tune and appreciative of the world around me and those who inhabit it who I would otherwise never come to know and whose perspectives and experiences I might have never come to understand. I strive to follow the example of Jesus Christ, who met people where they were in their lives and loved all he met in a radically sacrificial and compassionate way."
Morgan (she/her) is from Crozier, VA and will be serving as a Client Choice Coordinator with Catholic Social Services.
"I serve because that is how I am called to give of myself to those in need. Showing love and caring for others takes sacrifice and commitment and I believe that I am called to do that through a year of service."
McKenna (she/her) is from Saint Paul, MN and will be serving as a Social Justice Coordinator with YWCA Alaska.
"I serve because I simply just like to be with and for others. Serving is not saving. It's to build and craft authentic relationships, and to listen and be open to those around you. At the end of the day, I serve because it's the most human thing we can do."
Derk (he/him) is from Laramie, WY and will be serving as an Adult Education Instructor with Alaska Literacy Program.
"I serve because I recognize the privilege and opportunities that I grew up with, and I want to extend that to people who have historically not had those privileges and opportunities. I want to leave a positive footprint on society and my communities, and I am excited to do this through an educational setting!"
Jordanne (she/her) is from Mount Pleasant, WI and will be serving as a Group Coordinator with Partners for Progress.
"I serve because I want to dive deeper into what it really means to be a woman for and with others while simultaneously deepening my spiritual life. Life is about vulnerability and being in solidarity with those in the communities that I am a part of. I serve to recognize the human dignity of all beings and to walk with others hand-in-hand on their life journey. This is a time to be intentional with others and myself about who I desire to become."
