Story
At the age of 17, I am challenging myself to run 21km at Weymouth Half Marathon 2019. Why? Because people with chronic illnesses suffer things I cannot begin to imagine, and I am blessed to have the ability to make a difference by raising money for 2 charities that are working to cure them.
I have a grandparent who suffers from Alzheimer's disease. My Nan has been living in care and nursing homes for the last 7 years. She can't do anything for herself any more - even eat - and she doesn't recognize her own daughter. She hasn't got much of a life any more, and I miss the Nan that she was.
My grandfather on the other side has been diagnosed with bowel cancer in the last 2 years. He has endured horrible surgeries and conditions in hospital, and become so thin and frail. I hate the fact that every time I see him I have to prepare myself for the fact that it could be the last.
Having seen first hand the effects of these illnesses, I am raising money for both Alzheimer's Research UK and Cancer Research UK to contribute to research projects that can save lives - not just for my grandparents, but for all the people who suffer every day. 17 is the minimum age for the half, and I have been training since the beginning of November. It will be a challenge, but it's nothing compared to what people with these illnesses face every day, and the people around them too.
Because I'm doing this for 2 charities, you can donate to either this page (for Alzheimer's) or my other page (for Cancer). To reach the Cancer Research UK page, click the link to my 'team' page above, called Amy Smith Half Marathon. Both pages are in the team so you can donate to your preferred charity. Or, you can split your donation between the two. My goal is to raise £300 across the two charities. Thank you so much for anything you can give - no donation is too small.
With much love,
Amy x
