Story
From the earliest days when mum cycled through Snowdonia with Aunty Sis, she loved mountains and often said when we were children, that she would have liked a cabin in Alaska! Some of her most enjoyable moments in Scotland have been on trips to the mountains, and she often commented on the lovely view from her window.
She also has been a positive support and encouragement to the many youngsters in the family and among our friends. We have been touched at some of their tributes to her.
So in looking for a charity for donations, we felt that the John Muir Trust, with its record of preserving some of the finest mountain wildernesses in Britain, and with its prestigious award which encourages young people to discover and conserve their local wildernesses, hit the button.
The Trust aims to give wild places a voice. It owns and conserves large tracts of wild land. It does for Ben Nevis, Sandlewood Bay and other remote areas in Scotland, what the National Trust does for Snowdon and the Lake District.
The John Muir Award sets participants challenges, to :
- Discover a wild place
- Explore its wilderness
- Conserve - take personal responsibility
- Share Experiences
The Award is popular right across the UK with National Parks, Wildlife Trusts and schools all supporting those who want to take part.
So your donation will help keep mountains and other remote places in the UK unspoilt for future generations. It will encourage others to conserve wildlife and landscape whilst they enjoy the sort of experiences that mum remembered so vividly.
Examples of how your money could be spent are :
£6 provides essential materials for up to two participants in the John Muir Award.
£25 supports a volunteer to participate in conservation work such as beach cleans, invasive species control, and wildlife and habitat surveys
£100 pays for the removal of 100m of fencing from areas of wild land on Skye, Sandwood, Nevis and Knoydart (once regenerating trees are no longer under threat from grazing damage).
Or any size donation can be used to boost the land fund to save other wild places.
