Story

I am living in Kibungo, Eastern Rwanda for 14 months, working on a project with VSO in order to help improve the standard of Rwandan education in primary schools.

In my role, I work with the teachers in 12 local schools in order to help them learn new learner centred methods and to make resources for using in the classroom. I run workshops, observe lessons and team-teach with the teachers in order to further develop their teaching abilities.

The teachers in Rwanda have a very difficult job. Many of them do double shifts every day, seeing 60 students in the morning and another 60 in the afternoon. On top of this, Rwandan legislation requires them to teach in English after the third year of primary education. For some teachers, this is their third spoken language, after Kinyarwanda and French - so it is not an easy task!

VSO provides great training opportunities for their volunteers to ensure they are well prepared for placements. The money you donate goes straight into this wonderful project and enables trained people, like me, to help in developing countries in a way that is sustainable and will help give local people empowerment so that they can build themselves a brighter future.

So please dig deep and donate now.
