On September 23rd 2013, I'm travelling nearly 4,000 miles away to start a 3 month volunteer placement in Burkina Faso, West Africa. I'll be going with the International Citizen Service and working on one of their amazing projects for the whole time I'm there. ICS brings together young people from different countries to fight poverty and social inequality– with volunteers from the UK working alongside volunteers from the developing world.Each

ICS only works with projects that have specifically requested their help – and where the energy and skills of young volunteers can make a direct impact.

Each project is designed to fight poverty and make a lasting difference by working with local people to meet local needs. Although I won’t find out which project I’m assigned to before the end of August, I’ll be working alongside some of the most marginalised groups in Burkina (such as women or disabled people) to help promote their rights and create sustainable livelihoods. It’s by no means a holiday, I’ll be working 9-5.
