Story
Hello, I am Amy.
My boyfriend, Jamie and I have created this page, in the hope of fundraising for Myeloma Uk.
Jamie will dive 15,000ft, travelling up to speeds of 120mph. (Wednesday 10th July 2013)
We have chosen the charity Myeloma UK, due to my Nan being diagnosed with the uncurable cancer over 10 years ago. To be told that your beloved Nan has cancer is hearbreaking. Thankfully, with the help of Myeloma UK, she is still with us today.
What is Myeloma you may ask...
Myeloma is a type of cancer arising from the plasma cells in the Bone Marrow.
- Bone marrow is the ‘spongy’ material found in the bones that produces blood cells i.e. white cells, red cells and platelets
- Plasma cells form part of your immune system
Normal plasma cells produce antibodies to help fight infection. In myeloma, malignant plasma cells (myeloma cells) in the bone marrow produce large amounts of an abnormal antibody known as paraprotein. Unlike normal antibodies, paraprotein lacks the capacity to fight infection and has no useful function.
Myeloma can affect multiple locations in the body where bone marrow is present. This is why it is often called multiple myeloma. The bones of the spine, skull, pelvis, ribs and around the shoulders and hips are all common places where myeloma can occur.
Treatments and drugs for myeloma can be very effective at halting its progress, controlling its symptoms and complications and improving quality of life. However, treatment for myeloma is not curative.
Now that you know a little more about the charity and the cancer itself, we ask that you sponsor Jamie, as little or as much as you are able.
Please help my Nan, and all those out there that suffer like she does.
Thank you.
