Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

I have been extremely lucky to be chosen to run the London Marathon 2019 for the Children’s Liver Disease Foundation team.

The charity is extremely close to my heart due to them supporting us as a family through the heartbreaking time when my youngest son Archie was a new born.

In January 2010 our 6 week old son Archie was diagnosed with biliary atresia a rare and life threatening liver condition. He underwent life saving surgery the same week to try and restore bile flow and save his tiny liver. The operation Archie had (the kasai) is only successful 60% of the time, 40% of children continue to deteriorate and require a liver transplant in the first year of life.

Thankfully for us Archie’s was successful which I believe is down to not only his amazing surgeon and after care team but also early detection of his condition, which happened thanks to CLDF and their information.

CLDF have continued to be an amazing support to us as a family, from sitting with us giving us stories of hope whilst Archie was in theatre to organising family fun days so we can meet other families in our position.2 children each day are diagnosed with liver disease (there are over 100 different conditions) yet CLDF are currently the only UK charity supporting families like ours.

They are a tiny charity and rely heavily on fundraising.

Running the London Marathon is giving me the chance to give something back for all the support and to help make sure CLDF remain there to support Archie and children like him, and to maybe one day find a cure.

The charity helped us understand his condition and the treatment a football mad 9 year old who is turning into a cracking little goalkeeper.  He is also keen on running himself and has promised to help me train for this event!!!

The road ahead is unclear for Archie’s health and he will need further treatment and the likelihood of a liver  transplant is almost certain at some point in his life.

The charity are there every step of the way to help him understand his condition and how he will be able to live a normal life regardless.  They work tirelessly to support children like Archie, some who aren’t as lucky to be in such good health, and help them to have a normal childhood.
