Story
Dear friends,
Once again, I am raising money for a small local charity, Shine Cancer Support http://www.shinecancersupport.org/about). It supports people in their 20, 30s, and 40s who have experienced a cancer diagnosis. Shine provides many services, including information and events specifically targeted at young adults, and workshops for healthcare professionals.
I know there are many cancer charities out there, however there are many reasons why I have decided to raise money for Shine. Having worked in research that looks into the impact of a cancer diagnosis in young adults, and seen the impact of a diagnosis within this age group with my own eyes, I believe that Shine is an invaluable charity.
I imagine most people know someone they love that has received a cancer diagnosis, or maybe been through it themselves, and seen or experienced the physical and mental hardship of the treatment. Young adults can have very specific concerns and experiences regarding their cancer due to their age group.
Some women are pregnant when they are diagnosed, and experience great fears around receiving chemotherapy whilst pregnant to save themselves and their baby. Also, whilst dealing with the extreme
consequences of treatment or having long-stays in hospital, some need to look after small children. Whether fertility can be preserved prior to treatment can be a huge concern for young adults with cancer. Many also experience high rates of social isolation. At this age, so often people are starting their careers and find themselves too unwell to work, then unable to pay their bills. We know from research that a big concern for young adults is finances, or how to get a mortgage. Young people are often planning weddings, dating, living alone, at University – imagine being diagnosed with cancer during this time? It can mean a life just setting off gets put on hold. Clear guidance and support is needed, and this is where Shine Cancer Support provides a niche service to those young adults with cancer, and their families.
So what am I doing to raise money for this amazing charity? On 11th-12th June 2022 I will be doing the Nightrider for the second time, cycling 100km overnight around London. As many of you know I love cycling, but I will have to stay awake after 10pm, which is the biggest challenge no doubt! But my passion, and gratitude to this charity will keep me awake and peddling on, as will the kind donations from you. I am trying to raise £1000 for Shine, but if I can get more that will be incredible!
Your donation, no matter how big or small, will be received with my deepest gratitude.
Much love,
Amy x #smashitforshine
