Story
After completing the London to Brighton cycle with colleagues from LSHTM in Sept 2023 and smashing our fundraising target, I have set myself a new challenge to take part in the London Landmarks half marathon in April 2024.
I am aiming for ~2 hours and will be raising money for The Gambia Patient Access Fund.
The MRC Unit The Gambia at LSHTM operates a small hospital in Fajara as part of their Clinical Services Department. The hospital often treats patients with complicated tuberculosis, HIV, cardiac, respiratory, gastrointestinal and neurological problems in adults, as well as malnutrition, congenital conditions, rheumatic heart disease and common childhood infections in children.
Each year, 60,000 to 75,000 consultations are undertaken, and there are 1,000 to 1,500 admissions on the 40-bed ward. Between a third and a half of these patients are children aged 14 years or under.
The clinic is known by patients for its high quality and respectful care, excellent and friendly consultant staff, and affordable prices. With quality healthcare being harder to find and access for many patients in The Gambia than in other parts of the world, demand for the services are high, and patients and their families are grateful for the care they receive.
Donating to this fund allows more people to access high quality care that can save lives.
£10 could pay for an echocardiogram
£50 could pay for a CT head scan
£100 could pay for an MRI scan
£150 could pay for a more complex CT scan with contrast
Huge thank you in advance for your kind donations and messages - every little helps!
