I'm raising funds to allow me to take part in International Citizen Service (ICS) programme in Cambodia. From November I hope to join a development programme for 3 months, teaming up with Cambodian volunteers to tackle some of the urgent problems facing the local community.

ICS is a scheme that offers young people the chance to contribute to projects that are of genuine value to some of the poorest communities around the world. On return to the UK, we undertake an ‘Action at Home Project’, ensuring that our new skills also benefit our local communities.

The project I’m working on is run by the development charity, VSO and aims to improve the livelihoods of those living in the rural Province of Ratanakiri. Our main aim is to research and develop good practices in the raising of chickens as an alternate means of food production, both for village/family use and for commercial sale for income generation. Other aims include helping to manage and develop their ‘eco-tourism’ industry and to advise and support applicants for microfinance.

This is a unique opportunity to work alongside people from a different culture who have requested help from young volunteers to fight poverty and make a difference where it’s needed most.
