Story
Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
We are raising money for Roy Castle Lung Cancer Foundation. In November 2021 seemingly out of nowhere after experiencing terrible headaches I ended up in ED. Fast forward to the end of the day where I was told that I had some form of cancer as lesions were found after an MRI on my brain. At aged 40 I had always led a healthy lifestyle and as a passionate runner it came as a huge shock (3 days before diagnosis I’d ran 6 miles). Further investigation and lots of waiting a stage 4 lung cancer diagnosis was made..
Sadly, late diagnosis for lung cancer is so common and often it is diagnosed like this. There are also many misconceptions surrounding lung cancer, for instance that if only effects smokers and those that are elderly. Unfortunately it’s one of the biggest killers in the UK yet so many people think that it is just smokers that get the disease.
Nick & Amber are running for The Roy Castle Lung Cancer Foundation (Amber is running Amsterdam half, Queens Park Half Marathon in London and we’ve now had our London Marathon charity places confirmed with Roy Castle Lung Cancer Foundation). Both of us have ran the London Marathon previously but never with lung cancer. Living with lung cancer has taken some adjustments and we feel so very grateful for science, the NHS and The Roy Castle Lung Cancer Foundation. Just 5 years ago it would have been a very different story.
Thankfully at the time of writing this I am in good health, my treatment is going well. One of mine and Nick’s bucket list things was always to run a marathon together. Before the diagnosis we always talked about doing it when our children were a little older so now we've decided to take the plunge and go for it.
Roy Castle Lung Cancer Foundation is the leading UK lung cancer charity dedicated to helping everyone affected by the disease.
Since 1990, when the charity was set up by Professor Ray Donnelly, they have funded millions of pounds of essential lung cancer research, looking for ways to detect the disease as early as possible and save lives.
Roy Castle support everyone affected by lung cancer – from diagnosis, through treatment, living with the disease and end of life care. We raise awareness, prevent future generations from getting it and challenge the misconceptions of lung cancer. We do all this so those diagnosed can live well with lung cancer for as long as possible.
