Hospice Walk 2021

Fundraising for Northern Ireland Hospice
Fundraising for Northern Ireland Hospice
July 6th 2021 will mark the 1st Anniversary of the passing of my wee mum Doris Meldrum. Having experienced how supportive and helpful the NI Hospice were during Mums final few months, I wanted to do something to raise some much needed money so that others can benefit the same way in which our family did.
Mum’s battle against cancer began some 20 years ago when she was diagnosed with breast cancer. I was in my early teens at the time and didn’t realise just how amazing she was in dealing with this disease (mum was one of those people who kept her pain and struggles to herself, not letting us know if she was having a bad day, if she was in pain or felt sick), I can say with all honesty I never heard her complain about her cancer once. So many times I remember coming home from school to see her up a ladder cleaning windows, cutting the grass or trimming the trees after a round of Chemo. This is just the type of wee woman she was though if mum were here now she would give God all the credit for such strength.
This first battle with cancer gave Mum a new lease of life and both she and my dad took up ballroom dancing. Mum was in her element...Dancing to keep fit and healthy while getting to dress up in fancy clothes, jewellery and makeup. My dad loved it too....being able to show her off!
Fast forward 20+ years cancer decided to make a return, Mum fought once again with the same bravery and strength and when it was obvious things werent going to improve the NI hospice got in touch. The NI hospice not only helped in a practical way but offered support to us as a family as well. Because of the NI hospice my Mum passed away peacefully at home surrounded by her family and although we miss Mum so much it gives us tremendous comfort to know that because of the hospice she got her final wish.
Most people when they decide to raise money for charity normally do something big, like run a marathon. The problem is, I’m not a runner and neither is my husband, or my kids. But we can WALK! So that’s what we’re going to do, walk Doan Mountain in Mums memory.
COVID-19 has had a devastating impact on the Hospices' funding and we really need your support, now more than ever this year. All funds raised from this year's Hospice Walk will enable us to continue to provide our vital palliative care services.Thank you.
